Maundy Thrsday –
“A God Who Serves
Worship Readings: Exodus 24:3-11John 13:1-15

When most people think of “Maundy Thursday,” they think of a celebration of the Passover and Jesus sitting around the table with His disciples. But do you know what “Maundy” actually means?

“Maundy” comes from the Latin word “mandatum” meaning “commandment.” It references Jesus’s words: “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” (John 13:34) In today’s readings you’ll see Jesus loving His disciples by serving them and washing their feet.

As we remember that we are delivered from slavery to sin, death, and the devil, we recognize that we are saved by Jesus’s blood. Not only did Jesus fulfill the commandment to “love one another” by washing His disciples’ feet, but He also fulfilled it ultimately by giving up His life for us, dying on the cross in our place.

And so we come to Jesus, just as we are, knowing that we are saved by His sacrifice on the cross and freed to live lives of love and service to our Lord and one another.
