Lent can be a powerful time of devotion and discipleship for you and your household. Ideally, the season of Lent gives worshipers the opportunity to recognize and focus on their need for a Savior so they can appreciate Jesus’ sacrifice on Good Friday and His resurrection on Easter all the more. Preferably, this season of repentance is lived out both together in worship and personally as you reflect in the presence of the Lord.
Ash Wednesday begins our Lent season. Services will be held at 3:30 PM and 6:00 PM. New this year, we will be experiencing the Imposition of Ashes as Households. As you enter the sanctuary, please pick up a small paper bag that will have a sealed container of ashes and a few cotton q-tips. Husbands and wives, parents and children, singles and empty nesters will all have the opportunity to be reminded of the sin Christ suffered and died for on the cross through an ash cross on their forehead or hand.
Our following Wednesday’s of Lent will continue to host devotional services at 3:30 PM and 6:00 PM. We will be going through “The Psalms of Lent.” Consider reading Psalm 19, 22, 25, 107, and 119 this week. Then come to worship on Wednesday to join in song and hear God’s Word.
St. John’s is also making two devotional resources available for this Lent season. Our weekends in Lent follow the theme of “Return to the Lord.” As with years in the past, daily devotion books are available for pickup in the gathering space. New this year is also a Devotional Family Calendar. Each day of Lent has a simple devotional thought and scripture reference for you to read and discuss together. This is a great tool for any household, so please pick one up and put it prominently in your home for use. “Return to the Lord” is relevant series that calls us to follow Christ to the cross and know the hope that awaits us in His Resurrection.
My name is Karen Schmidt, and I work part-time with the pastors in the church office. My main task is to answer the calls that come to the church and multi-task and adjust to whatever comes my way. I need someone to share this position. If this is something that might interest you, I would like to meet you for a cup of coffee!
