Disciple Talk
Jesus' teaching in Mark continues...and this one is hard. When tested by the Pharisees regarding divorce, Jesus states very directly that divorce is not part of God's plan for marriage. God's plan (Gen. 2) was that two would become one flesh and remain. God's plan is for all, not just married couples having problems. We should talk about marriage, what God's plan is for marriage. God put this at the center of human relationships for all of creation. But, divorce is part of life. How can we talk about following Jesus in the real pain of broken relationships? It is being honest about God's plan. God's plan does not include divorce. God's plan does not include adultery or abuse or neglect or addiction or laziness. This life is full of sin and broken relationships. We, the body of Christ, should be talking about all of this, trying to find God's plan in a broken and sinful world. Christ gave his live on the cross for these broken relationships and sin in our lives. So, there is hope and a promise from God in the midst of very real pain. This is Jesus' message, that divorce is not part of God's plan but that we should follow him in all parts of life.
