The Active Life

January is a time of longer, darker days. For many people this is a challenging time filled with let downs from the holidays and frustration over resolutions made or not made. The series theme may at first glimpse add to the burdensome nature of this time of year. However, there is a play on words that can be unpacked to highlight our Lord’s gracious work in all seasons.

“The Active Life” first describes our Lord Jesus whose Epiphany reveals God’s “Life” to and for our world. The weekly Gospel readings, primarily from Matthew, will highlight this “The Active Life” through which all have entrance into the Father’s family.  However, “The Active Life” is also God’s will for His children. Each week we will hear one of the 10 Commandments proclaimed and explained.  God has direction for His children—for their thoughts, words, and deeds.

The Christian is challenged to embrace God’s call of active righteousness for life. This is faith in action. And yes, God’s active life takes place amidst long, darker days and ever changing emotions.  It’s always been like this… and these days are the best days for God to bring His will through the active lives of His people.  The pastors will be using the Luther’s Small and Large Catechism alongside the Scriptures. Those in attendance will be encouraged to use these as well.
